Another batch of ABUAD students set for London study trip

Barely six weeks after the trio of Boluwatife Akinoso, Odafe Angela Okparanyote and Moyinoluwa Omoyajowo, all 500 Level MBBS students of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), traveled to America for Clinical posting under the Tripartite Partnership among ABUAD, Little-by-Little Foundation and John Hopkins Hospital, three other students at the university are on their way to King’s College, University of London on a two-week Students’ Exchange Summer School Programme.

The students are Rasheed Aro, a 400 Level Law student, Lukman Awogbemi, a 300 Level Economics student and Temitope Oladokun, a 400 Level Nursing student, who had earlier earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Dietetics.

LASG, UNICEF leverage digital learning to reduce out-of-school children

To address the problem of out-of-school children, the Lagos state government has embraced the digital platforms provided by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to tackle the menace, especially in rural communities.

Speaking at a two-day media dialogue organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in collaboration with UNICEF, the Director, Policy, Planning, Research and Statistics, Ministry of Education, Dr. Afolabi Adejare, cited the recently launched Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP), an online/offline platform designed to complement the existing system of impacting knowledge, teaching and learning.

Fashola charges students on creativity, nation building

Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, has charged students of Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos State, to be creative and use skills learned from school to transform Nigeria.

Fashola, who stated this at the 38th convocation lecture of the college, said the graduands are the next set of people that will transform Nigeria to a great nation.

Firm donates STEAM laboratories to Edo, Delta schools

To promote a learning environment where students can participate in hands-on, practical Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), Seplat Energy has launched an initiative to donate well-equipped laboratories to schools in Edo and Delta.

Speaking at Ihogbe College in Benin City, Director of External Affairs and Sustainability, Seplat Energy, Dr. Chioma Nwachukwu, said the company has commenced distinct educational initiatives to achieve quality education for students and teachers in its states of operation.

Administrator bags honorary doctorate degree

Frontline administrator and management expert, Mr. Idowu Olanrewaju has bagged honorary doctor of Philosophy in Human Resources Management from the prominent Prowess University in Delaware, USA.

Idowu was among the few Nigerians bestowed with the rare honour.

School fees hike: NANS threatens to shut down Nigeria, all Airports

The Federal and State Governments in the country have been put on notice, to either stop the increase in tuition fees in all tertiary institutions across the country or face the hardest-ever student uprising.

The declaration was made by the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Usman Barambu while speaking at the 1st North-East Zonal Senate sitting of NANS held on Thursday at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), Bauchi.

Lagos seeks more private partnerships in education

The Lagos State Government has called on the private sector at corporate, group and individual levels to join it in providing more quality and functional education at all levels to the people of the state.

FSEC, NISLT organise 5-day staff workshop to enhance science students’ performance in practicals

Worried by the declining trend of science students performance in practical, (The Federal Ministry of Education), Federal Science Equipment Center, Ijanikin Lagos state in collaboration with the Nigerian institute of Science Laboratory Technology, NISLT have organised a 5 day workshop for the staff of the department of technical education, federal ministry of Education.

The event which was held between 30th of April to 4th May was held at the Nigerian institute of Science Laboratory Technology, NILST , Samonda Ibadan , the Oyo state capital was meant to train technicians on repair and maintenance of glass workshop equipment.

Anambra Library board, NLA donate books, writing materials to inmates in Awka

Textbooks and writing materials worth over N150,000 have been donated to the inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Awka Custodial Centre, by the Anambra State Library Board in collaboration with the Nigeria Library Association (NLA), Anambra State Chapter.

Also donated to the inmates are different toiletries in commemoration of the 2023 World Book and Copyright Day.

Don asks EFCC to engage forensic accountants in investigations

A professor of Forensic Accounting at the Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, Samuel Dada, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to always engage forensic accountants in its investigations of corruption cases.

He also called for the strengthening of the legal framework of the anti-graft agency to ensure that courts apply the provisions of Section 19 Sub-section 2 of the EFCC Act, 2004, to enable them to accelerate their trials of corruption cases and without government undue interference.

COEASU president decries poor funding, rise of illegal COEs in Nigeria

THE National President of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Dr Smart Olugbeko, has decried the rise of illegal colleges of education across the country.

Olugbeko also condemned what he described as poor funding of colleges of education in Nigeria, saying most of the public colleges of education could not have survived without the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Free university education unrealistic in Nigeria — former UNIOSUN VC

A former vice chancellor of the Osun State University, Osogbo, Professor Labode Popoola, has revealed that it is unrealistic for university education to be free in Nigeria if ivory towers are to compete favourably and be sustainable.

The professor of Forest Economics and Sustainable Development, University of Ibadan, explained that stakeholders, especially students, must be made to realise that payment of moderate fees would keep the institutions running and be able to meet up with their responsibilities of teaching, research and community development.

WAEC cautions exam supervisors against malpractice as 2023 WASSCE begins

As the 2023 school-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is about to commence across the country, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cautioned the examination officials, particularly the supervisors, to guide against any form of misconduct in their centres.

The deputy registrar and Ikeja zonal coordinator of WAEC, Dr Amos Dangut, gave the advice at a workshop at the Government Secondary School, Agege, to sensitise the supervisors on the ‘dos and don’ts’ expected of them and candidates during the upcoming examination.

JUST as some candidates, in some cases in outright collusion with the Computer Based Test (CBT) centre operators, continue to device new and sophisticated ways of cheating in examinations, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) also on annual basis evolves proactive and innovative measures to be ahead of the examination fraudsters.

Some of the devious means exploited by candidates to cheat in examinations as identified by JAMB in the past included impersonation, collusion with owners of the examination centres, multiple registrations, use of phones, wristwatches and other gadgets.

UNILORIN Optometry programme gets full accreditation

The Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN) has given full accreditation to the Doctor of Optometry programme of the University of Ilorin.

According to a statement by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, this followed a re-accreditation exercise carried out by the board on April 27th and 28th, 2023.

UTME: Candidate breaks record, scores 99 marks in mathematics, 337 in total

A student of Bishop Otubelu Juniorate, Trans Ekulu, Enugu, Lotanna Azuokeke has broken a record in his school by scoring 99 marks in Mathematics and 337 total in the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This was revealed in a statement issued by Dr Chiwuike Uba the Media Adviser to the Bishop of the Diocese of Nike (Anglican Communion), founder of the school.
