Anambra govt warns school principals against collection of illegal levies

The Anambra State Chairman of Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), Prof Nkechi Ikediugwu, has charged Principals of secondary schools in the state to desist from illegal collection of levies or face demotion.

The PPSSC chairman gave the charge when she visited Kenneth Dike Memorial Secondary School, Awka, on Monday, where she met with two students sitting close to the school’s gate and on interrogation, discovered that the students were chased out of classroom for nonpayment of school fees which was above the official school fees.

Direct Entry form sale closes Saturday, registration ends May 30 – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has announced that its 2023 Direct Entry e-PIN sales will close on Saturday, May 26, 2023.

The admission body also stated that registration of those who obtained the e-PIN ends on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

LAUTECH: Again, protest rocks Ogbomoso over relocation of agriculture faculty

Scores of Ogbomoso indigenes, on Monday, trooped out to major areas in the town to express their displeasure over the planned relocation of the faculty of agricultural sciences at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, to the newly established Iseyin campus of the institution.

DAILY POST reports that the Oyo State government had perfected plans to relocate the faculty of agriculture in the university to Iseyin campus.

Edo Govt Sacks 13 Varsity Lecturers, Demotes Others, Gives Reason

About 13 members of staff of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, have been dismissed for various cases of misconduct by the staff disciplinary committee of the University.

The acting VC of the school, Prof. Asomwan Adagbonyi, confirmed this while presenting the committee’s report to the special intervention team Adagbonyi noted that 132 of the cases have been concluded and decisions taken on them.

The Edo state government, headed by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has sacked 13 lecturers of state-owned Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma.

According to a report by The Punch, the lecturers were sacked over alleged offences ranging from falsification of age, fraud, misconduct, extortion and sexual harassment, among others.

Public varsities funding model unsustainable – ASUU

Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the current funding system of public universities by the federal and state governments in Nigeria is unsustainable.

Speaking at the ongoing 22nd National Delegates Conference of the Academic Staff Union of Universities which was held at the University of Jos, Vice-Chancellor, UNIJOS, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, said it was inappropriate for the country to have a proliferation of private universities without adequate funding of public universities.

Varsity matriculates 626 students in Edo

WELLSPRING University has matriculated 626 students for the 2022/2023 academic session to study various courses in the institution.

At the 13th matriculation ceremony 2of the school held in Benin, Edo State, the matriculants made up postgraduate and first degree students took the matriculation oath, promising to abide by the rules and regulations of the institution.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Isaac Ajayi, said the matriculants were made up of undergraduates in the College of Health Sciences, the College of Social and Management Science, the College of Science and Computing, the Directorate of Top-up and part-time studies and the postgraduate school.

Politician pays varsity fees for 200 students

The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, Olayinka Braimo, has offset the school fees of 200 university students in the state.

Receiving the cheques in Lokoja for the school fees on behalf of others, student representative, Saliu Abdulsalam, described the school fees payment as timely, said some indigent students had already lost hope of joining their colleagues to write the examination for the current semester and that God had used the governorship hopeful to wipe away their tears.

Okowa advocates entrepreneurship in school curriculum

GOVERNOR Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has charged the university’s authorities in the state to ensure that students were trained in entrepreneurship studies.

Okowa who gave the charge at the Founders’ Day Celebration of the University of Delta, Agbor, said that the new university had justified its establishment by admitting no fewer than 5,219 students since it began academic activities in the 2022/2023 academic session.

Group gifts students bursary

An educational support initiative, the Bola Tinubu Educational Support Programme, has given bursary awards to no fewer than 200 indigent undergraduates from different universities in Ekiti State.

The sponsor of the initiative and associate of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Adegboyega Bamisile, said that the gesture, which would be on an annual basis, was to support the educational growth of the beneficiaries and indeed needy students in the state.

VC laments private varsities exclusion from TETFund

The Vice-Chancellor of Westley University, Ondo State, Prof. Obeka Samuel has reiterated the call for the inclusion of private universities as beneficiaries of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund in the country.

He said it had been a disservice to the nation as the private varsities were not included in the TETFund scheme.

He stated this while speaking with our correspondent on the campus of the institution.

Foundation renovates Olumu Community School in Lagos

A non-profit organization, Gamaliel & Susan Onosode Foundation (GAMSU), has completed the renovation of Olomu Community Junior Secondary School, Ajah, Lagos State.

The organization, founded by the late Mr. Gamaliel Onosode in May 2013, is dedicated to improving the lives of children and youths through education.

NUC pilot study contingent visits UNILAG centres

A three-man contingent from the National Universities Commission (NUC) is on campus. They are on campus to carry out a pilot study at three centres of the University of Lagos: Central Industrial Liaison and Placement Unit (CILPU), Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC) and the Advancement Office.

How wrong information led to protest by Elechi Amadi Polytechnic’s students

On Monday, May 8 and 9, 2023, students of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, staged a peaceful protest over alleged late notice of the school to students on the removal of HND Business Administration after the students had paid fees.

The students alleged that the school management told students who had already paid, done their clearance and were writing exams to go home, that their examination was fake and unapproved.

ASUU re-elects Osodeke, others for another 2-year tenure

Osodeke was re-elected at the 22nd National Delegates’ Conference held at the University of Jos, Plateau State, which attracted stakeholders. He was first elected in May 2021 at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

At the end of voting, Osodeke polled a total of 362 ‘yes’ votes out of 379 accredited voters at the 22nd NDC meeting, with four against.
