Out-of-school children: Every child in Nigeria has right to learn — UNICEF

United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), despite the diverse importance of education, and though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million of the country’s children aged 5-14 years are not in school.
UNICEF further lamented that “Only 61 percent of 6-11 year-olds regularly attend primary school and only 35.6 percent of children aged 36-59 months receive early childhood education.’

Edo SUBEB Embarks on 181 Projects to Improve Infrastructure in Primary, Junior Secondary Schools

In order to continue improving infrastructure in public primary and secondary schools in Edo State, the State Universal Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) over the weekend, announced that it has embarked on 181 projects.
The projects which the agency said were ongoing, included the construction and renovation of classrooms, perimeter fencing, toilets among others.Addressing newsmen at a press briefing in Benin city on the achievements of the Board in the last two years, Chairman of the Board, Mrs. Ozevize Salami, disclosed that the state government provided free education for pupils in the state up to JSS 3, explaining that the school curriculum is enriched with life skills that makes the pupils competitive should they decide to discontinue their education.

Osodeke: Children of the poor will withdraw from schools due to fees hike

Emmanuel Osodeke, president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has urged the federal government to review the hike in fees of some public schools.

Osodeke asked the government to find a safe landing for the nation’s future leaders.

He added that the hike in fees could be counterproductive.

Tax on Sugary Drinks Will Reduce Healthcare Spending, Boost Govt’s Revenues, Says Varsity Don

A Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetology/ Director, Centre for Diabetes Studies, University of Abuja, Mrs. Felicia Anumah, has said taxes on sugary drinks would reduce consumption and save costs from obesity-related health challenges among others.
She stressed that evidence had shown that a tax on sugary drinks that raises prices by 20 per cent could actually lead to a 20 per cent reduction in consumption, thus preventing obesity and diabetes.

Makinde names Prof Adeyemo as SSG designate

Gov. ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo has announced the appointment of Mrs Olanike Adeyemo, a Professor at the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, University of Ibadan, as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) designate.

The announcement is contained in a statement on Monday in Ibadan by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Ogun: Students Assault Teacher for Stopping Cheating During Examination

For allegedly “disturbing” one of them from cheating during the just concluded Unified Promotion

Examination for secondary school students in Ogun State, a gang of 10 students, have reportedly waylaid and assaulted a teacher, Kolawole Shonuga.
Findings revealed that the incident occurred last Tuesday, at Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.It was gathered that Shonuga while invigilating the unified examination for the SS 1 Art class students, caught one Ashimi Adebanjo, 18 years, cheating and seized his paper.

Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has averred that those complaining about the increase in the University of Lagos State tuition spend such amount on phones.
Naija News recalls that the management of UNILAG had increased fees for undergraduate students in the institution.

School fees increase: Don’t snuff life out of us, parents urge Tinubu

Parents, under the aegis of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN, have called on President Bola Tinubu to apply the brake to the spate of increment in tuition fees and others by government-owned schools.
The parents said life was being snuffed out of them as a result of such increases in almost all sectors, such as fuel, electricity and now school fees.
