Academic activities paralysed as Benue varsity ASUU begins indefinite strike

Academic activities came to a halt at Benue State University, BSU, Makurdi, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Benue State University branch, embarked on an indefinite strike.

Our correspondent, who visited the institution Friday morning, observed that some students who had come for morning lectures were shocked to hear that their lecturers had begun a strike.

BSU ASUU, in a statement issued by the branch chairman and secretary, Comrade Kwaghfan Tarnongo and Terrumun Gajir, respectively, made available to the news media on Friday, declared that the strike was initiated on Thursday after its meeting. Abuja private school owners seek Wike’s intervention over 5% tax regime

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter has rejected the new tax regime imposed on its members by the Department of Quality Assurance (DQA) under the FCT Education Secretariat.

In a letter of appeal by NAPPS which was made available to Tribune Online signed by its Chairperson, Rukayat Agboola and addressed to the Minister FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the association said the new regime will lead to increase in the number of children that will drop out of school and add to the already large numbers.

According to NAPPS chairperson, the newly implemented tax system, as outlined by the Directorate of Quality Assurance (DOQ), has inadvertently put a heavy burden on private schools their locations within the FCT notwithstanding. UNIMED offers automatic employment to three best graduating students

The University of Medical Science (UNIMED) in Ondo State has offered automatic employment to its top three graduating students in the 2022/2023 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, announced the offer during the institution’s 5th convocation ceremony, expressing the institution’s commitment to supporting the beneficiaries in pursuing further education.

The beneficiaries include Miss Francisca Ademulegun, who achieved a First Class in Physiology, Miss Mercy Saba, the best female graduating student, and Michael Aremu, the best male graduating student. FUTMinna: Mycotoxin, food safety centre to reduce cancer cases, others — Director

The Director, Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety, Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMinna), Prof. Hussaini Anthony Makun, has said that the commissioning of the Centre will assist in reducing the current increase in cases of cancer and other diseases in parts of the Country and in some other countries in Africa.

He raised the optimism on Tuesday shortly after the commissioning of the multi- million naira edifice at the Gidan Kwano main campus of FUT Minna.

Professor Hussaini stated further that presently, Master’s degrees and Doctorate Programmes students from twelve African countries are at the moment studying capacity building and research programmes at the centre, using several assorted equipment of various technological innovations at the centre to prevent and control any poison from our food. A Professor of Intellectual and Developmental Disability has called on stakeholders in the education sector to address the growing number of out-of-school individuals who have intellectual disability to ensure the attainment of the sustainable development goal four (SDG4).

Delivering the 13th inaugural lecture of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, titled, “Despondency, Despair and Hope, Tales of Intellectual Disability in Special Needs Education” on Wednesday, Professor Olubukola Christianah Dada, stated that children with intellectual disability should not be left out from getting qualitative education, which would make them productive members of the society. Dangote varsity develops robot to support staff domestic work

The Vice-Chancellor of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano, Professor Musa Yakasai has said that the institution has created a robotic material to support staff domestic work such as cleaning, sweeping and knighting in the institution.

Baptist old students celebrate late members

The Baptist Academy Old Students Association has held the fourth thanksgiving and remembrance service in memory of 19 old boys who passed away in 2023.
