The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter, has issued a stern warning, indicating a potential delay in the resumption of academic activities scheduled for April 28. This decision stems from the union’s demands following the violent events that unfolded at its Senior Staff Club on April 12, during an event hosting Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata. ASUU UNIBEN demands disciplinary action against identified students, including members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), involved in the incident, emphasizing the need for strict sanctions to be imposed on all culpable parties.

In a statement released by its Chairman, Ray Chikogu, and Secretary, Success Abusomwan, UNIBEN ASUU condemned the violent acts perpetrated by students, denouncing such actions as rebellious and terrorizing. The union called for comprehensive disciplinary measures against the individuals responsible for the attempted murder of a UNIBEN lecturer, insisting that those found guilty must face the full consequences of the law.

While the University of Benin’s spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, labeled the violent incident as unacceptable, the Edo State Government, through its Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, also voiced condemnation of the violence at UNIBEN. With tensions rising, stakeholders await decisive action from university authorities and law enforcement agencies to address the aftermath of the troubling events and restore a conducive environment for academic pursuits.
