In a bid to resolve the ongoing strike between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the management of the University of Abuja, the House of Representatives has called for a truce.

Rep Abubakar Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, made the call during a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, and a team of ASUU members from the institution at the National Assembly on Tuesday in Abuja.

Fulata emphasized the importance of ensuring the continuity of academic activities, highlighting the intervention that led to the removal of universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) by the Federal Government.

“When we came on board, we promised that there should be no disruption of academic activities in Nigerian universities. We observed that all university managements were in complex conditions under the IPPIS. We made the appeal, and President Bola Tinubu listened to us and removed universities and other tertiary institutions from IPPIS,” he stated.

Appealing to ASUU to suspend the indefinite strike that began on May 2, Fulata reiterated the commitment of the National Assembly to address the challenges facing universities, including issues related to the appointment of Vice-Chancellors and the functioning of university councils.

He further assured that the National Assembly would soon introduce a bill to address these issues comprehensively.

In urging ASUU to suspend the strike, Fulata emphasized the importance of ongoing consultations to reach a lasting resolution and avoid further disruption to academic activities.

As stakeholders continue to engage in dialogue, hopes are high for a swift resolution to the impasse, ensuring the uninterrupted pursuit of education at the University of Abuja and across Nigerian universities.
