The United Nations’ International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the Yobe State Government and the Almajiri Child Rights Initiative (ACRI), has called for the regularisation of education for Almajiri children to help them integrate into modern society and achieve their full potential. This advocacy was the focal point of a roundtable meeting titled “Achieving Durable Solutions and Sustainable Impact for Protecting Vulnerable Street and Migrant Children in Nigeria.”
The event, which began on Monday and will run through Wednesday, features workshops on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Trafficking in Persons (TiP) in commemoration of the International Day for the Almajiri Child. IOM Chief of Mission, Mr. Laurent De Boeck, emphasized the organization’s commitment to upholding the principles of non-discrimination, the best interests of the child, and safeguarding their dignity.
Mr. De Boeck explained that the roundtable aims to foster dialogue among key stakeholders, enhance responses to child trafficking, and strengthen partnerships to ensure child protection. He stressed the importance of providing Almajiri children with the opportunity to realize their full potential and lead lives of dignity and opportunity. “It is crucial that every child, particularly those in vulnerable conditions, have access to their rights and the support needed to thrive,” he said.
Yobe State Commissioner of Religious Affairs and Ethical Orientation, Mr. Yusuf Umar, commended the organization of the event, stating that it was timely and apt in addressing issues related to Almajiri children. He noted that the discussions and workshops would offer valuable solutions to the challenges faced by Almajiri children and help integrate them into the educational system.
The roundtable underscores a collective effort to protect vulnerable street and migrant children, ensuring they receive a quality education that equips them for the future. The event reflects a commitment to creating a supportive environment where every child, regardless of their background, can succeed and contribute positively to society.
