The Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, is developing a new reward system to incentivize teachers in public schools and attract qualified educators to improve the state’s educational standards.

Speaking at the 2024 World Teachers’ Day event in Umuahia, Otti emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade teacher training, with 1,200 primary school teachers already retrained and a new batch of secondary school educators set to undergo training in November 2024.

Governor Otti also highlighted the progress made on school remodeling projects across Abia’s Local Government Areas, aiming to complete at least one hundred retrofitted school buildings before the 2025 school session. The initiative goes beyond infrastructure, aiming to create an environment that fosters curiosity and supports both academic and moral development.

Addressing security concerns, the governor noted the deployment of personnel from the Homeland Security Office to protect schools against vandalism and criminal activities. Traditional rulers and community leaders have also been engaged to safeguard public properties, as the state aims to make its public school system one of the best in Nigeria, focusing on teacher quality, learning environments, and student safety.
