The Lagos State Government has approved the elevation of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to a specialised medical university, to be named the University of Medicine & Health Sciences (UMH).

This decision was announced by Mr. Tolani Sule, Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, during a stakeholders’ meeting organised jointly by the Ministries of Tertiary Education and Health.

The transformation, initiated in August 2024, aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of delivering a world-class medical university and healthcare system to Lagos State. The new university is set to address the growing need for high-quality medical education and healthcare services amid rising population and healthcare demands in the region.

Commissioner Sule emphasised the government’s commitment to bridging the training gap for medical personnel and elevating healthcare standards in Lagos. The university is expected to commence its first admissions in the 2024/2025 academic session, with a robust infrastructure and medical staff already in place.

Supporting this vision, Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, and LASUCOM Provost, Professor Abiodun Adewuya, assured stakeholders of the institution’s readiness to become a leading center for medical excellence in Nigeria.
