The University of Ilorin’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Non-Teaching Staff Unions joined a nationwide strike on Monday, organized by the national JAC, which includes the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

The strike action, initiated due to non-payment of allowances and unresolved agreements with the government, has resulted in closures at federal universities across Nigeria.

NASU Chairman for the Unilorin Branch, Suberu Ibrahim, confirmed the strike would be “total and indefinite,” citing the government’s failure to pay four months of withheld salaries and implement agreements from 2009. He noted that while President Ahmed Tinubu ordered payment after recent protests, the Finance Ministry has yet to act.

SSANU Chairman at Unilorin, Falowo Naheem, voiced similar frustrations, highlighting that the economic conditions in Nigeria make withheld salaries particularly harsh. SSANU’s National Financial Secretary, Akanbi Jimoh, affirmed the union’s commitment to securing improved welfare for its members.
