In a major boost to cancer care in Nasarawa State, TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and other collaborators, has donated a fully-equipped mammography center to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia.

This project is part of TotalEnergies’ corporate social responsibility efforts aimed at improving local healthcare facilities and supporting the early detection and treatment of cancer within the community. The donation reflects TotalEnergies’ commitment to the global #WorkingWithCancer movement, which advocates for comprehensive support to cancer patients.

During the handover ceremony, TotalEnergies’ Managing Director Mattieu Bouyer highlighted the pressing need for cancer care infrastructure in Nigeria, where an estimated 120,000 new cases are recorded annually.

Bouyer commended the recent elevation of the hospital to Federal University Teaching Hospital status, stating that this will significantly expand healthcare access and provide vital services to surrounding communities. He thanked NNPC and other partners for their shared commitment to impactful healthcare projects and emphasized that the new center will enhance early cancer detection and affordable treatment options for residents.

Governor Abdullahi Sule, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, praised TotalEnergies, NNPC, and their partners for their crucial role in improving healthcare in Nasarawa State. He reiterated the state’s ongoing investments in both primary and tertiary healthcare and reaffirmed support for initiatives that address critical health needs. Other dignitaries, including the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage (Rtd), and the hospital’s acting Chief Medical Director, Dr. Ikrama Hassan, expressed gratitude, noting that the facility would help ease the burden of breast cancer by enabling residents to receive treatment within the state rather than traveling elsewhere.
