Professor Umaru Pate, Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere, has called for a shift in training and research models in communication to prepare young people for advancements in technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking at the Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna International Conference at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, he emphasized that embracing AI and cyber technology is essential for future job markets, urging investments in infrastructure and human capital.

Addressing the conference theme, “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Communication Practice and Scholarship in Nigeria,” Pate highlighted how evolving technology, business models, and audience behavior have reshaped the media landscape, impacting content credibility, funding, and professional safety.

He noted a disconnect between young Nigerians and traditional media, driven by shifting media habits and shortened attention spans. Pate also expressed concern over AI’s potential misuse, which could lead to privacy invasions, cyber threats, and the rapid spread of disinformation that’s increasingly hard to detect.

Professor Pate pointed out additional challenges, such as the rise of tech-savvy individuals entering journalism without professional training, and tech companies dominating content distribution, posing risks to conventional media.

To address these issues, Pate advocated for enhanced media literacy, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial education in communication studies. He also called for adaptable governance frameworks that align with emerging technologies rather than restrictive regulations.
