The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of working to dismantle public tertiary education in Nigeria, vowing to continue its fight to protect the country’s university system.

ASUU leaders criticized the government for failing to renegotiate the ASUU-FGN 2009 Agreement, despite numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs) intended to address the issues plaguing public universities.

In a show of support for its members, ASUU has distributed PhD grants of N500,000 each to selected members based on rigorous proposal reviews.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, praised members for their commitment to defending Nigeria’s public universities, despite facing intensified challenges at state institutions such as Kogi State University, Lagos State University, Ebonyi State University, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, where members are reportedly penalized for standing up for the university system.
