In a bid to reduce electricity costs and provide a conducive learning environment, the Federal Government has announced plans to replicate the near-completed solar microgrid project at the University of Abuja across other tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals nationwide.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, made this known during an inspection of the 95% complete solar grid project at the university.

Adelabu highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to education and economic growth as key drivers of the initiative, which aims to shield institutions from rising energy costs and reduce dependence on the national grid. He urged the university to maintain the grid sustainably, promising nationwide implementation of similar projects to enhance power reliability in education.

University Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi lauded the project as a vital solution to the institution’s energy challenges, expressing optimism about the relief it will bring. The project, executed by the Rural Electrification Agency in partnership with the Nigeria Electrification Programme, is slated for commissioning by President Tinubu in December.
