The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the recent appointments of Dr. Bernard Odoh as Vice Chancellor and Mrs. Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike as Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, citing violations of due process and eligibility criteria.

In a statement signed by ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union accused the Amb. Greg Mbadiwe-led Governing Council of breaching extant laws and ignoring the advertised criteria for the positions. ASUU called the appointments “a mockery of the academia” and demanded urgent intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who serves as the university’s Visitor.

ASUU argued that Dr. Odoh does not meet the requirement of being a full professor and vowed to resist any attempts to legitimize the appointments, describing them as acts of “lawlessness and impunity.”

The union’s National Executive Council (NEC), which met on November 8–9, 2024, at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, resolved that the appointments are unacceptable.

“For the avoidance of doubt, ASUU has no confidence in the Amb. Greg Mbadiwe-led Governing Council and urges the President to restore law and order at NAU,” the statement read.

ASUU also warned against any further actions that undermine due process at the institution, calling the appointments a provocation that threatens to plunge the university into a deeper crisis.
