Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have initiated a fresh strike following the area councils’ failure to comply with the new N70,000 minimum wage.

The strike has disrupted the ongoing first-term examination, with pupils turned away from schools just days before their exams were set to conclude.

The strike, led by the Nigeria Teachers’ Union (NUT), Kubwa chapter, is in response to continued arrears owed to teachers. Comrade Ameh Baba, the NUT chairman, explained that the December 1st deadline set by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for states to implement the wage increase has triggered the action. Despite the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, approving the wage with the November salary, teachers are still awaiting payment, particularly those under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and the councils continue to owe N40,000 peculiar allowances and N35,000 wage awards for up to one year.
