The Borno State Executive Council has approved the renaming of Borno State University to Kashim Ibrahim University, in tribute to the first Governor of Northern Nigeria, Kashim Ibrahim. The decision was made during the first State Executive Council meeting of 2025, presided over by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri. The meeting addressed various state matters, including a review of the previous year’s performance and plans for 2025.

Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, confirmed the development while briefing journalists. He explained that the renaming process would involve legislative amendments and official notifications to bodies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). “Council approved that Borno State University shall be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University, subject to legislative work by the State Assembly and action by the Ministry of Education to inform relevant regulatory authorities,” Tar stated.

Additionally, the Council approved a street naming and house numbering initiative in Maiduguri and other urban areas as part of the state’s urban renewal efforts. The program, involving agencies like the Nigerian Postal Service and local leaders, aims to enhance urban planning and governance. Professor Tar noted that the updates would be reflected on platforms such as Google Maps to improve public access and development planning.

Governor Zulum, addressing the Council, commended its members for their dedication and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to post-conflict recovery and impactful projects. The session also included a valedictory ceremony for the outgoing Head of Service, Barrister Malam Fannami, who was praised for his contributions to the state’s development ahead of his upcoming retirement.
