The 2025 STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) Summer Internship is now accepting applications, offering high school students the chance to work with experts in Earth and space science. Hosted by NASA and The University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research, the internship program provides hands-on opportunities for participants to contribute to research while gaining valuable experience in NASA’s scientific projects. Interns will focus on Earth systems, climate science, natural hazards, astronomy, remote sensing, and space geodesy, working with satellite data and NASA scientists.
This year’s SEES program introduces new features, including distance learning modules and hands-on projects. Interns will learn Python programming and engage in research projects with NASA scientists. The program will offer both in-person and virtual work options, allowing students to participate in flexible yet immersive experiences. The program will conclude with a Virtual SEES Science Symposium, where interns can present their findings.
The 2025 program is divided into two phases. The first phase, from May 1st to July 1st, 2025, includes distance learning modules. From June to July 5th, 2025, interns will participate in virtual project work, with the in-person portion held at the University of Texas at Austin from July 6th to July 19th, 2025. The in-person phase will provide housing, meals, and local transportation, along with a limited number of travel scholarships for students traveling to Texas. The program will conclude with a Virtual SEES Science Symposium on July 21st-22nd, 2025.
To be eligible for the SEES internship, high school students must demonstrate a strong academic background and an interest in STEM fields. The application process requires students to submit academic records, complete essay questions, provide an introductory video, and submit a recommendation form. The application deadline is February 22nd, 2025, with recommendation forms due by March 1st, 2025. Students will be notified about their selection by May 1st, 2025.
