Kaura-Namoda, Zamfara State – A devastating fire outbreak at the Mallam Ghali Tsangaya School in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 17 children, leaving the community in deep mourning.

The tragic incident occurred late Tuesday night when a fire broke out in a study hall where the Almajiri pupils were staying. According to eyewitnesses, the inferno lasted for about four hours, causing severe destruction and injuries to at least 16 other students.

The Chairperson of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Haidara, confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Wednesday.

A resident, Abdul Razak Bello, explained that the fire spread rapidly due to the presence of corn and millet stalks stored within the school premises. “There were about 100 students in the house, and after they were evacuated, it was initially believed that none remained inside. But when they returned after the fire, they started seeing legs and hands—many had been burnt beyond recognition,” Bello recounted.

The 17 victims were laid to rest on Wednesday, in line with Islamic burial rites, as the community continues to grieve.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, and investigations are ongoing to prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, calls for improved safety measures in Almajiri schools have intensified, with many urging the government to provide better infrastructure and fire prevention mechanisms.

This incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety regulations in Tsangaya schools, where many underprivileged children receive Islamic education.
