A Nigerian man, Kolawole Ajayi, has attracted widespread attention on social media after sharing that he left his 13-year career as a nursery and primary school teacher in Nigeria to become a full-time suya seller in London.

Ajayi’s story went viral following an interview on TikTok by @Onijekujelondon, where he was seen preparing suya while recounting his journey from teaching to entrepreneurship abroad. He revealed that he had been running a suya business alongside his teaching job, as well as exploring other income streams, including YouTube content creation, catering, and barbecue services.

“I was doing it for like 13 years as a side hustle. I was cooking, doing YouTube videos, catering for people, and doing barbecues. When my passive income became about half of my salary, I decided to leave my nursery job and focus on this full-time,” Ajayi said.

He explained that as the suya business grew, it became more profitable and sustainable than teaching, prompting him to fully transition into entrepreneurship. He also acknowledged the challenges, recalling incidents such as strong winds scattering his suya pepper and other weather-related disruptions.

The viral video has generated mixed reactions online. Some praised Ajayi’s courage and resilience. TikTok user @MrsHil, who said Ajayi managed her children’s nursery in Nigeria, commented, “Nice to see him thriving.”

However, not all responses were positive. Some questioned the quality and hygiene of his food, while others criticised personal interactions, including a business owner, Non Tarnish Jewelry Store, who described their experience with Ajayi as disappointing. Another user, @Venom, highlighted the contrast in earnings, noting Ajayi reportedly earned about £140 as a teacher in Nigeria, reigniting debates over teachers’ salaries and welfare in the country.

Ajayi’s journey has sparked a broader conversation about career transitions, entrepreneurship, and financial realities for professionals in Nigeria.
