Tension flared in Ogun State as students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, stormed the Oru-Ijebu Police Division, demanding the release of colleagues they believed were being held in custody.

The protesting students reportedly gathered in large numbers at the station, insisting on the immediate release of their peers and threatening to attack the facility if their demands were not met.

However, the Ogun State Police Command dismissed the claims, stating that no OOU student was detained at the division. According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, officers on duty made efforts to explain the situation to the agitated students, but the crowd became increasingly unruly.

Babaseyi said the protesters forcefully opened the station gate, hurled stones and bottles at officers, and threatened to destroy property within the premises. The situation escalated, prompting the police to call for reinforcements and deploy teargas to disperse the crowd.

“On Saturday, March 28, 2026, a group of students mobilised to Oru-Ijebu Police Division, claiming some of their colleagues were detained. The Divisional Police Officer confirmed that no student was in custody,” Babaseyi stated, adding that normalcy has since been restored.

The police command urged students to channel their grievances through lawful and peaceful means, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring public safety.
