The University of Jos has directed the immediate evacuation of students from its hostels following a worsening security situation in Jos, Plateau State.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, on behalf of the university management.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after renewed violence and “near chaotic scenarios” in areas surrounding the institution heightened fears for the safety of students. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, consequently ordered the evacuation as a precautionary measure.

Students residing within Jos and nearby areas were instructed to vacate the hostels from 3 p.m. on Wednesday, while those whose parents or guardians live outside the state are to be evacuated starting from 8 a.m. on Thursday. The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has provided transport services to facilitate the exercise, including movement during curfew hours.

The university assured that adequate security has been deployed to protect hostels and campus facilities, while urging students and staff to remain calm as the situation is closely monitored.

The development comes amid heightened tensions following recent deadly attacks in Angwan Rukuba and other parts of Jos. Although the state government had eased a previously imposed 48-hour curfew, reports of fresh attacks have continued to trigger panic across the city.
