The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted full accreditation to the College of Health Sciences of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), formally approving the continuation of its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme alongside an admission quota of 100 students.

The approval follows a successful accreditation visit to the institution led by MDCN Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnameka Nwakanma, who expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness, infrastructure, and academic organisation demonstrated by the university during the rigorous assessment exercise.

The accreditation team conducted a detailed inspection of key medical departments, including Human Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, as well as other core units in both basic and clinical sciences. The team also evaluated the FUTA Teaching Hospital, which serves as a critical training ground for medical students.

Officials noted that the hospital visit provided insight into the institution’s capacity to deliver hands-on clinical training, describing it as a vital link between theoretical learning and patient care delivery, and a strong indicator of FUTA’s readiness to sustain quality medical education.

Dr Nwakanma commended the university management for its commitment to regulatory standards, stressing the importance of continuous compliance with MDCN requirements to ensure that medical education in Nigeria aligns with global best practices.

The Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, described the accreditation as a major milestone for the institution, noting that significant investments had been made in facilities, staffing, and academic structures to meet and sustain the standards required for the MBBS programme.

She reaffirmed the university’s dedication to excellence in medical training and expressed appreciation to stakeholders, including the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for his support in advancing the growth of the institution’s medical programme.

The latest MDCN approval comes shortly after the National Universities Commission (NUC) also granted full accreditation to the MBBS programme, marking a double regulatory endorsement that strengthens FUTA’s standing in medical education and expands opportunities for aspiring medical students.
