The Federal Government has commended the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for offering fully funded scholarships to 50 Nigerian students in petroleum and mineral studies, describing the initiative as a major boost to human capital development and a reflection of strong bilateral ties.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the commendation on Monday, April 27, 2026, while receiving the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, during a courtesy visit in Abuja.
Idris said the scholarship programme aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen key sectors of the economy through capacity building, particularly in petroleum and solid minerals. He described the initiative as more than an educational opportunity, noting its long-term strategic value.
“This is not just a scholarship programme; it is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, particularly in key sectors central to our economic growth and diversification,” he said.
The minister also highlighted the sustainability of the programme, noting that the annual selection of 50 students would ensure a continuous supply of skilled professionals for critical industries.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening relations with Saudi Arabia and accelerating the implementation of existing agreements, including pending memoranda of understanding in broadcasting and other sectors.
Idris further expressed Nigeria’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia amid tensions in the Gulf region, calling for peaceful and diplomatic resolutions.
Earlier, Ambassador Al-Balawi said the scholarship offer, facilitated through King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, covers tuition, travel, accommodation, and monthly stipends. He described it as a demonstration of genuine cooperation and investment in Nigeria’s youth.
The ambassador also noted ongoing efforts to deepen economic collaboration between both countries, particularly in trade and investment, emphasizing their shared potential as regional economic powers.
Senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation were present at the meeting.
