The NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS) and Seplat Energy Joint Venture has reinforced its commitment to education and youth development with the successful hosting of the PEARLs Quiz and STEAM Competition Grand Finale in Owerri, Imo State.
The annual initiative, which targets secondary school students in the company’s host communities, is designed to promote academic excellence, critical thinking and innovation. This year’s edition attracted participation from over 200 schools across the state, with students progressing through rigorous screening stages to reach the final round.
Speaking at the event, Seplat Energy’s Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, Chioma Afe, described the competition as a celebration of intellect, discipline and the boundless potential of young people. She noted that the programme was developed following extensive research which identified education as a critical need in host communities.
“The world today demands more than memorised answers. Young people must think critically, challenge assumptions and apply knowledge to real-life situations,” she said, adding that the initiative is part of the company’s long-term investment in human capital development.
Afe explained that the PEARLs Quiz complements other interventions such as the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme and the Science Innovators Programme, all aimed at strengthening educational outcomes.
Also speaking, Acting Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NUIMS, Olanrewaju Igandan, represented by Minanengiyeofori Loveday, said the initiative reflects a sustained commitment to nurturing intellectual growth among Nigerian youths.
“As we reflect on the journey since inception, it is inspiring to see how this platform has evolved into a space where young minds can showcase their knowledge and skills,” he said.
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, represented by the Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, Emeka Mgbudem, commended the joint venture for its consistent investment in education, healthcare and community development. He highlighted projects such as a major infectious disease hospital and the “Eye Can See” initiative as evidence of the partnership’s broader impact.
The competition saw Mountain Crest High School emerge overall winner, earning a ₦5 million project grant, a trophy, and scholarships for its students. Owerri City Secondary School came second with ₦3 million, while Eziachi Secondary School, Orlu, secured third place with ₦1 million. Teachers of the top schools were also rewarded with laptops.
In the STEAM innovation category, PAC College clinched first place with a ₦500,000 grant, followed by St Theresa College and Urban College.
Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity, describing the competition as transformative and inspiring. Students noted that beyond the prizes, the experience strengthened their confidence, resilience and drive to excel.
With growing participation and impact, the PEARLs Quiz continues to stand out as a flagship corporate social investment programme, underscoring the NNPC/Seplat JV’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians and transforming education at the grassroots.
