Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, has secured pre-clinical accreditation for its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
The approval also includes an increase in the institution’s annual admission quota for medical students from 50 to 120, a development expected to significantly boost the university’s contribution to medical education and healthcare manpower in Nigeria.
The accreditation followed an assessment visit conducted in April 2026 by an 11-member MDCN team, which evaluated the university’s College of Medicine based on national standards covering infrastructure, staffing, laboratory facilities and clinical training frameworks.
In an official letter signed by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of MDCN, Prof. Fatima Kyari, the council confirmed the pre-clinical accreditation of the MBBS programme and approved the expansion of the institution’s student intake.
The accreditation team, led by the council’s Deputy Registrar, Dr N. U. Nwakanma, reportedly carried out a detailed review of the university’s teaching facilities, curriculum implementation, governance systems, diagnostic equipment, academic staffing and clinical partnerships.
Reacting to the development, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Achievers University, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, described the approval as a major milestone for the institution and an important contribution to Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
“This approval reflects years of strategic investment in infrastructure, personnel and academic systems aimed at building a medical college capable of meeting global standards,” Ayorinde said.
He added that the university currently has the capacity to admit more than 3,000 students across its 38 academic programmes, stressing that the institution has continued to expand its academic and infrastructural facilities to meet growing demand for quality higher education.
Also speaking, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, said the increased admission quota demonstrates the confidence of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in the university’s readiness and institutional capacity.
“The development is proof of our commitment to producing highly skilled medical professionals equipped to address contemporary healthcare challenges,” Aremu stated.
The acting vice-chancellor further disclosed that the university recently secured full accreditation for seven other academic programmes presented for re-accreditation.
The programmes include Medical Laboratory Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Criminology and Security Studies, as well as Sociology.
According to Aremu, the approvals reflect the institution’s dedication to academic excellence, quality assurance and continuous improvement across its programmes.
The latest development is expected to strengthen Achievers University’s position within Nigeria’s higher education sector, particularly in the training of medical and healthcare professionals amid ongoing concerns over shortages of qualified doctors in the country.
