The Sokoto State Government, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the European Union (EU), has reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe and secure learning environment for schoolchildren across the state.
The pledge was made during a stakeholders’ engagement focused on strengthening child protection, improving school safety, and promoting access to quality education for all children, particularly girls and other vulnerable groups.
Officials at the event emphasized that creating safe spaces for learners is essential to improving school enrolment, retention, and academic performance. They noted that insecurity, violence, and inadequate learning environments continue to pose challenges to educational development in many communities.
The Sokoto State Government assured stakeholders that it would continue to implement policies and programmes aimed at protecting children within and outside school environments. The government also pledged to work closely with development partners to address barriers that prevent children from accessing education.
UNICEF highlighted the importance of safeguarding schools and ensuring that children can learn in environments free from fear, abuse, discrimination, and violence. The organisation stressed that safe schools are critical to achieving positive educational outcomes and supporting children’s overall well-being.
The European Union reiterated its support for initiatives that promote child protection, inclusive education, and community engagement. Representatives of the EU noted that investments in education and child safety are vital for sustainable development and social progress.
Stakeholders also called on parents, community leaders, teachers, and school administrators to play active roles in protecting children and creating supportive learning environments.
The partnership between the Sokoto State Government, UNICEF, and the European Union is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to improve education delivery, enhance school safety measures, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive in a secure environment.
