Lagos State has successfully evacuated 236 of its students from Jos, Plateau State, following escalating security threats that sparked fear among residents and students in the area.

The evacuation was triggered by a distress message from a student in Jos, who raised alarm over the deteriorating situation, pleading for urgent intervention. The message highlighted growing panic and concerns for personal safety, prompting swift action from the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS).

In response, NULASS National President, Hafiz Olufowobi, set up a five-member emergency response committee led by the union’s Vice President II (Diaspora), Oluwadarasimi Lawal, to coordinate the rescue operation. The committee worked closely with relevant authorities, including the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr. Olawale Kappo, to ensure a smooth and safe evacuation process.

At the University of Jos, the Dean of Student Affairs provided a verified database of 602 Lagos indigenes and residents. However, due to panic and communication challenges, 236 students were successfully processed for evacuation through a digital registration platform.

As the security situation worsened, arrangements were finalized for the students’ departure under heavy security. The Plateau State Police Command provided armed escorts, while the Lagos State Government supplied buses and stipends to support the students throughout the journey.

The students departed Jos under tight security and arrived safely in Lagos on Sunday evening. They were received by top government officials, including the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule; the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Kasali Adeniran; and Mr. Kappo, alongside members of the NULASS national executive.

NULASS commended the Lagos State Government for its prompt and coordinated response, particularly praising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Commissioner for Youth, Mobolaji Ogunlede, and other stakeholders for prioritizing student safety.

The union also acknowledged the dedication of its emergency response committee, whose efforts ensured the success of the operation.

Reaffirming its commitment to student welfare, NULASS urged state governments across the country to adopt proactive measures to protect their citizens, especially students, during periods of crisis.
