The Kogi State Government has condemned the attack on an unregistered orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, describing the incident as unfortunate and preventable.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government confirmed that 15 pupils have been rescued following swift intervention by security agencies, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of other victims.

The facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools, was reportedly operating illegally in a remote and bushy area without registration or approval from relevant state authorities.

According to the statement, the attack occurred late on April 26, 2026, when unidentified gunmen invaded the premises and abducted pupils.

Fanwo commended the prompt response and professionalism of security operatives, noting that their intervention helped limit the impact of the attack and led to the rescue of several children.

He assured that security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue the remaining victims and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The government also raised concerns about the rising risks associated with unregistered schools and orphanages operating in isolated areas without proper oversight, warning that such facilities pose serious security challenges in the current environment.

It urged operators of educational and welfare institutions to comply strictly with registration requirements and ensure proper engagement with relevant authorities for security assessment and monitoring.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the state government said security operations remain ongoing to fully restore order and prevent further incidents.
