The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has called on teachers in public primary schools to intensify efforts to increase pupil enrolment as schools resume for the third term of the 2025/2026 academic session.

Chairman of the Board, Olalekan Ifede, made the appeal during a monitoring visit to selected schools across the state, stressing that sustained enrolment drives are key to strengthening basic education and improving learning outcomes.

Represented by Permanent Member III, Abiodun Ajayi, Ifede expressed concern over the low turnout of pupils and urged teachers to adopt proactive strategies to engage parents and guardians.

“It is important to intensify the enrolment drive. Teachers must liaise with parents and guardians to ensure that pupils return to the classroom,” he said.

He also highlighted the need to focus on foundational skills such as reading, speaking, and writing, describing them as critical to pupils’ academic success.

While commending teachers for their dedication and professionalism, the chairman urged them to translate their efforts into improved performance among learners, adding that recent gains in the sector should be sustained.

Headteachers who spoke during the visit, including Omowunmi Enitan of Yewa South Local Government Nursery and Primary School II, Ilaro, and Fausat Nasir of St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School in Abeokuta North, appreciated the board’s monitoring exercise.

They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening enrolment efforts and improving academic outcomes in their respective schools.

Other schools visited during the exercise included St. Luke’s Primary School, Ibara-Orile; Christ Church Primary School, Imasayi, Yewa North; and Ansar-ud-deen Primary School, Imasayi, Yewa North.
