The Enugu State Police Command has launched an investigation to identify and prosecute individuals behind a social media report alleging that armed herdsmen attacked a school in Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state.
The command described the report as false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary fear among residents, particularly students, teachers, school administrators and parents.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said extensive security assessments, intelligence gathering and investigations carried out by the command found no evidence of any such attack in Ezeagu or any other part of Enugu State.
According to him, security operatives immediately conducted on-the-spot checks and other investigative measures following the circulation of the report, which confirmed that the claim was entirely fabricated.
“The command notes with concern the deliberate creation and circulation of false information capable of inciting fear and panic among members of the public,” Ndukwe stated.
He explained that the misinformation had the potential to mislead residents and disrupt public confidence in the security situation within the state.
The police spokesperson disclosed that efforts had been intensified to track down those responsible for originating and spreading the report, adding that they would be made to face the full weight of the law.
Ndukwe said the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, had directed the command’s tactical and intelligence units to strengthen investigations and ensure the arrest of all individuals involved in the dissemination of the false information.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of schools and communities across Enugu State.
The police urged residents to disregard the report, remain calm and continue with their lawful activities while staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious persons or activities to security agencies.
The command also encouraged members of the public to make use of its emergency lines to report security concerns and assist efforts to maintain peace and public safety throughout the state.
