During the Second Quarterly Engagement of the Ministry of Education with Heads of Units and CEOs of its agencies, Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman clarified that the federal government has no intention to privatize public universities.

This statement follows concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) alleging plans to hand over federal universities to private investors through public-private partnerships.

Minister Mamman emphasized that the government’s policy supports transnational education, aimed at enhancing global competitiveness in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. He debunked rumors of university privatization, asserting the government’s commitment to strengthening public institutions despite ongoing reforms.

Highlighting the role of the private sector in tertiary education, Mamman noted the increasing presence of private universities in Nigeria. He underscored the government’s strategy to attract international investments while collaborating with global educational institutions to bolster local universities.
