UNICEF’s Deputy Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Rownak Khan, has emphasized Borno State’s persistent battle with recurring cholera outbreaks since 2009, affirming UNICEF’s dedication to assisting the state government in efforts to prevent and control the disease.

The body has donated emergency response kits valued at $69,075 to the Borno State government to combat the cholera outbreak in the state.

She noted that the donation includes 30 Acute Water Diarrhoea kits (90 units) and 50 beds, along with 300,000 doses of the oral cholera vaccine, with an additional 600,000 doses on the way.

Dr. Khan outlined UNICEF’s active role in the response efforts, which includes providing safe water, promoting hygiene practices, facilitating cholera vaccination, and supporting case management services. She emphasized the organization’s collaboration with the Nigerian government and other partners to deliver vaccines that have already reached over 500,000 people.

The Borno State government, represented by Special Adviser on Health Matters Dr. Abubakar Hassan, expressed gratitude for UNICEF’s swift intervention. The state commended the long-standing partnership with UNICEF, pledging to utilize the donations effectively to improve cholera case management and save lives.
