The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Awka, has lauded President Bola Tinubu, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, and Permanent Secretary Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu for their intervention in the disputed vice-chancellor appointment at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK).

In a statement signed by MDCAN Chairman Dr. Victor Modekwe on Tuesday, the association expressed gratitude for the government’s response in nullifying the appointment of Prof. Bernard Odoh as vice-chancellor, describing it as a pivotal move to reinforce transparency and accountability within the institution. MDCAN emphasized that this intervention marks a significant step in restoring trust among academic stakeholders.

The recent selection of Prof. Odoh as vice-chancellor sparked controversy and drew resistance from multiple university stakeholders, leading to conflicting positions between the university and the Federal Ministry of Education.

Following Prof. Odoh’s appointment, a memo from the Ministry, reportedly signed by Permanent Secretary Ilyasu, cited “gross disregard” for proper process in the selection and consequently annulled both Odoh’s appointment and that of a new registrar.

In response, the university’s leadership issued a statement advising the public to disregard the ministry’s directive, maintaining that due process had been followed in the VC’s appointment.

MDCAN, however, raised further concerns over the conduct of UNIZIK Registrar Barr. Rosemary Nwokike, criticizing her recent communications with the Ministry, which MDCAN claims lacked formal council endorsement.

MDCAN reiterated its commitment to collaborating with government authorities to maintain the integrity and development of educational institutions in Nigeria.
