Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), warned that 40% of 2024 NECO candidates might not advance to tertiary institutions due to failing grades in Mathematics and English. He shared this concern during a teacher capacity-building workshop in Calabar for English and Mathematics educators from the South-South region.

Ajayi revealed that while 61% of NECO candidates achieved five or more credits, including in core subjects, a significant 40% did not pass both English and Mathematics. He noted similar trends in the 2024 WAEC results, where 28% of candidates also failed to secure credits in these essential subjects, limiting their higher education prospects.

He emphasized that a quality curriculum and modern facilities alone are insufficient for educational progress without well-trained teachers who can effectively implement the curriculum.

Ajayi highlighted that Nigeria faces a severe teacher shortage in terms of both quality and quantity, which is why NSSEC prioritizes ongoing training for teachers, especially in core subjects like English and Mathematics.

“Teachers are the backbone of education,” Ajayi stated, adding that neglecting their training and motivation ultimately harms the educational system and national development.
