The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, has announced that Federal Unity Colleges across the country are prepared to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their teaching and learning processes.
Speaking in Lagos at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges, hosted by the Southwest zone, the minister said the colleges already have the facilities needed to commence the programme. She added that the government has made provisions to supply additional resources and training to ensure smooth implementation.
Prof. Ahmad explained that teachers and principals would be trained to effectively use AI tools as part of the newly reviewed national curriculum. She reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to revitalising education through curriculum reform, teacher professionalisation, and digital technology integration.
“The Minister of Education has a huge agenda on digitisation. We have a lot of platforms. First, the teachers themselves need to be developed to understand how they can use different digital tools and AI tools in the classroom,” she said. “You are aware that we did the review of the curriculum, and one subject was introduced—Digital Technology—for secondary schools. It includes aspects of AI: how to use AI positively for teaching and learning. We are starting gradually and working toward full implementation.”
Prof. Ahmad also reminded principals that they represent the Federal Ministry of Education in their respective states and must uphold the highest ethical standards. She urged them to take the AGM’s resolutions seriously and work collectively to restore the lost glory of Federal Unity Colleges, which she described as “symbols of excellence and national pride.”
Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, Dr. Mark Oseni, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting education through adequate funding and oversight. He called on the executive to prioritise funding for the colleges, noting that they play a foundational role in national development.
Oseni assured the principals that the legislature would continue to push for improved resources and policies to strengthen school administration, urging them to return to their schools “better equipped to tackle challenges and improve performance.”
Chairman of the Principals of Federal Unity Colleges, Dahiru Shehu, also encouraged his colleagues to make effective use of the revised curriculum in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“It is our responsibility as teachers of Federal Unity Colleges to give our students skills that will make them useful to themselves and society at large,” he said.
The meeting underscored a renewed national drive toward digital education, with the integration of AI positioned as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s evolving learning ecosystem.
