ABUJA, NIGERIA – The National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has announced its commitment to take responsibility for the burial of Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the esteemed designer of the Nigerian flag, who passed away 10 months ago. This decision aims to ensure that Akinkunmi receives a befitting burial, addressing concerns over the perceived neglect of the late national hero’s funeral arrangements.

In a statement, Caleb Nor, media assistant to the Executive Secretary of NICO, explained that the institute’s decision was influenced by recent discussions highlighting the lack of progress in organizing Akinkunmi’s burial. He emphasized that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, there is a strong emphasis on upholding Nigerian cultural values and ensuring respect for those who have significantly contributed to the nation.

The Executive Secretary of NICO, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, stated that the institute’s decision reflects the cultural imperative to honor the deceased and respect national heroes. “It is a prominent part of our culture as a people not to neglect our heroes. Characteristically, our culture does not ignore this kind of cry. To which extent, the cry of the family of late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the man who designed the Nigerian flag, has come to the attention of the federal government, and NICO has compassionately considered taking up a major role and responsibility in coordinating and collaborating with other agencies that may be necessary in giving a befitting burial to this our fallen hero,” Ajiboye said.

The Honourable Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Barr Hannatu Musa Musawa, has expressed deep concern about the situation and has directed NICO to immediately address it. According to Nor, the institute is already in contact with Akinkunmi’s family to determine how the federal government can assist in providing a dignified burial for the late designer.

Ajiboye further highlighted the importance of honoring those who have contributed to the nation’s heritage and identity, noting that Akinkunmi’s creation of the Nigerian flag is a significant legacy that must be appropriately commemorated.

This initiative underscores the federal government’s dedication to preserving cultural norms and ensuring that national heroes are remembered and honored in a manner befitting their contributions to the country.
