Ibrahim Waiya, Executive Director of Citizens for Development and Education (CDE) and Chairman of the Conference of Northern States Civil Society Networks, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions and advised against street protests as a solution.

Speaking in Kano on Monday, Waiya emphasized that Nigeria’s low levels of civic awareness and the complexities of religious and ethnic sentiments could hinder effective and peaceful demonstrations.

Waiya acknowledged that while economic hardships might drive citizens to protest, the lack of coordination and potential for exploitation by politicians could lead to chaos. He referenced the ENDSARS protests as an example, noting that many young protesters remain imprisoned. “Peaceful protests are lawful, but they risk disrupting the daily lives of the poor and worsening their suffering,” Waiya said.

Waiya criticized the Federal Government’s insensitivity, highlighting that over 85% of Nigerians struggle to feed themselves. He noted that measures taken by the government following the removal of fuel subsidies were ineffective and insufficient. Waiya called for more practical and empathetic solutions to address the nation’s economic crisis.
