The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Public Services International (PSI) have denounced the Nigerian government’s ongoing suppression of trade unions and dissenting voices.

They expressed grave concerns over the recent arrest and harassment of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and General Secretary of PSI-affiliated National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria, as indicative of a broader clampdown on freedom of expression.

PSI General Secretary Daniel Bertossa criticized the government’s treatment of Ajaero, calling it a threat to democracy and international labor rights. Bertossa urged the Nigerian government to release all unlawfully detained unionists and end the campaign of intimidation, which he argues damages Nigeria’s global reputation.

NASU General Secretary Peter Adeyemi also condemned the government’s actions, describing them as a severe overreach reminiscent of military rule. He urged the government to address its policies and improve conditions for workers rather than suppress dissent. PSI called for international solidarity against authoritarian practices and vowed to raise the issue with global institutions like the International Labour Organization.
