Today, September 23, Government College Lagos, located off Eric Moore Road in Surulere, kicks off its 50th anniversary celebrations.

Spearheaded by the Government College Old Boys Association (GCLOBA), led by National President Vice Admiral Leye Jaiyeola (rtd), the week-long festivities will highlight the school’s rich history and commitment to educational excellence. A press briefing on Sunday set the stage for a series of impactful events, including a special commissioning by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Central to this anniversary are several landmark projects aimed at enhancing the school’s educational infrastructure. Among these is a state-of-the-art STEM facility, generously facilitated by Senator Tokunbo Abiru, designed to equip students with essential skills in science and technology. This facility includes an internet-enabled lab powered by fiber optics, enabling students to engage in critical thinking and innovative problem-solving. Additional projects include fully furnished Biology, Chemistry, and Physics laboratories, as well as sports facilities including tennis, basketball, and badminton courts, all intended to elevate the educational experience.

The celebration began with a heartfelt thanksgiving service at the Anglican Church, and will continue with a Jumu’ah prayer at the Muslim Association of Nigeria Mosque. Later in the week, activities will extend to philanthropic efforts, including a visit to the Atumda Olu & Pacelli School for the Blind to donate gifts, as well as a tree-planting exercise and career mentoring talks. A gala night will honor past principals, teachers, and notable alumni, celebrating their contributions to the school community.

As the festivities unfold, the GCLOBA reaffirms its vision for Government College Lagos to remain a flagship institution within Lagos State’s educational landscape. With a commitment to continuous improvement and community engagement, the old boys strive to ensure that the next generation of students are equipped for success in an ever-evolving world. This golden anniversary not only celebrates the past but also paves the way for a bright future.
