The people of Oke Ako in the Ajoni Local Council Development Area of Ekiti State have called on Governor Biodun Oyebanji to establish an agricultural institution on their extensive fertile farmlands.

In a letter to the governor, the Regent of Oke Ako, Princess Tinuade Ogunbiyi, highlighted the community’s rich agricultural history and its capacity to host such an institution.

Princess Ogunbiyi pointed out that Oke Ako is blessed with vast arable land, suitable for a college of agriculture and related institutions. She noted that the community has previously hosted successful agricultural initiatives, including the Western Region Agricultural and Rural Development Corporation in 1952 and the National Agricultural and Development Agency in 1992. These projects thrived due to the area’s enriched soil and the friendly disposition of its residents.

The Regent detailed several factors that make Oke Ako an ideal location for an agricultural institution. She emphasized the suitability of the soil for cash and food crops, its lack of contamination from toxic substances, and the availability of five viable dams that provide water for livestock and dry-season farming. Additionally, Ogunbiyi noted that Oke Ako is not prone to flooding, further enhancing its agricultural potential.

In light of recent security challenges posed by armed herdsmen in the area, the Regent expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for his visit and for facilitating the establishment of YSJ Farms, which has significantly improved security in the community. She mentioned the presence of security operatives from various agencies, which has contributed to a reduction in conflicts between farmers and herders. Ogunbiyi concluded her appeal by urging the governor to consider the request for an agricultural institution, citing his previous support for the community.
