The federal government has called on basic education teachers to urgently incorporate moral lessons into their daily teaching to develop students who are not only academically capable but also emotionally intelligent and socially responsible.

This directive was emphasized during the launch of teacher training and sensitization materials on moral reorientation in Abuja by Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education.

Highlighting the growing societal issues like terrorism, internet fraud, and violence among youth, Dr. Sununu stressed the importance of moral regeneration in schools. He noted that the upcoming basic education curriculum, set to be unveiled by the National Council of Education, has been designed to include values that address these social challenges and promote ethical decision-making and positive relationships among learners.

The minister also announced the government’s continued commitment to teacher development, with plans to enhance training, improve teacher welfare, and address issues like out-of-school children. He emphasized that the new initiatives aim to foster values such as mutual respect, kindness, and empathy within the school community to combat negative behaviors like bullying and cultism.
