The UNESCO Laureate and Vice-Chancellor of Crown University International Chartered Inc., USA, Prof. Sir Bashiru Aremu, has congratulated Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi on his appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), describing the development as a divine arrangement and a well-deserved recognition of excellence.
In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Monday, November 10, 2025, Prof. Aremu commended the Governing Council of UNIABUJA for making what he called “a visionary choice,” noting that Prof. Fawehinmi’s leadership and scholarship would usher in a new era of academic innovation and progress for the institution.
“Prof. Fawehinmi’s appointment is a testament to his academic and administrative expertise,” Aremu said. “He is expected to lead UNIABUJA to greater heights, fostering a culture of excellence, research, and innovation.”
The appointment of Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi was formally announced during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the University Council. According to a statement by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations Officer, Dr. Habib Yakoob, his appointment takes effect from February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable five-year tenure.
Prof. Fawehinmi currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, bringing decades of academic and administrative experience to his new role.
Prof. Aremu also expressed appreciation to the University’s Governing Council for approving an extension of the tenure of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mathew Adamu, who will continue in office until Prof. Fawehinmi assumes duty in February 2026. He wished the university management a smooth transition and continuity in its operations.
“This appointment reflects divine timing and purpose,” Aremu added. “As Prof. Fawehinmi prepares to take the reins, the university community should anticipate transformative leadership that will strengthen academic excellence and global competitiveness.”
Prof. Aremu, a distinguished scholar and researcher in Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology, currently serves as the Pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Science and Computing at Minaret University, Ikirun, Nigeria. Recognized globally for his contributions to education and technology, he has earned multiple international awards and fellowships.
He concluded by expressing confidence that under Prof. Fawehinmi’s leadership, UNIABUJA would experience renewed vigor, enhanced research output, and greater international visibility, adding that the new Vice-Chancellor’s vision and passion would inspire staff and students alike toward a brighter future.
