Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has reaffirmed his commitment to youth development with the disbursement of ₦64 million in scholarships to 326 indigent undergraduates across the state.
The scholarship funds, distributed through Fidelity Bank at Cana House, Awka, are intended to cover tuition and educational expenses for the current academic session. Beneficiaries include brilliant but financially challenged students admitted into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of nursing.
Addressing the students and their parents at the event, Senator Umeh described education as the most powerful tool for societal transformation, noting that his passion for supporting indigent students was inspired by the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
“I decided to place a premium on the education of indigent students by following the footsteps of our leader, Mr. Peter Obi, who consistently emphasizes that investing in the education of young people is the highest form of societal development,” Umeh said.
The senator explained that his commitment to educational support predates his political career. He recalled how, as a community member in Aguluzigbo, Anaocha Local Government Area, he often came to the aid of students whose parents could not afford school fees.
“I have always believed that no child should be denied education because of poverty. Even before politics, when students approached me for help, I did my best to support them,” he added.
The gesture was met with gratitude and emotion from beneficiaries. One of them, Nnajidemma Ogechukwu of the Millennium College of Nursing, owned by the Anglican Diocese, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the senator.
“This scholarship has made it possible for me to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. Senator Umeh has lifted a huge burden off my family,” she said.
For many of the recipients, the scholarship represents more than financial relief—it is a renewed hope and an opportunity to build a better future through education.
