The Federal Government, in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has presented a comprehensive report aimed at strengthening the ethical development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.
The report provides recommendations on how AI can be deployed responsibly while safeguarding human rights, privacy, inclusion and transparency. It is expected to guide policymakers, technology stakeholders, educational institutions and businesses in the adoption of ethical AI practices.
Speaking at the presentation, government officials emphasized the growing role of artificial intelligence in driving innovation, economic growth and public service delivery, stressing the need for appropriate regulations and ethical safeguards.
The report highlights key areas including data protection, accountability, fairness, digital inclusion, capacity building and the prevention of bias in AI systems. It also outlines strategies for ensuring that technological advancement benefits all segments of society without widening existing inequalities.
UNESCO representatives noted that the initiative aligns with global efforts to promote responsible AI governance and supports the implementation of UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
The organisation urged stakeholders to adopt a human-centred approach to AI development, ensuring that technology remains a tool for sustainable development and social progress.
