Residents of Ayegun community in Oyo State have decried what they describe as years of government neglect, lamenting that poor infrastructure, deteriorating schools, impassable roads and persistent power outages have continued to hinder development and worsen living conditions in the area.
A visit to the community revealed several public schools struggling with low enrollment, inadequate facilities and a shortage of learning materials, forcing many parents to seek alternative options for their children despite financial constraints.
Community members attributed the declining school attendance to the poor state of educational infrastructure and the difficult conditions under which teachers and pupils operate. They warned that the situation could further undermine access to quality education and increase the number of out-of-school children in the area.
Residents also expressed concern over the condition of roads linking the community to neighboring towns, describing them as unsafe and nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season. According to them, the poor road network has affected transportation, economic activities and access to essential services, including healthcare and education.
Adding to their frustrations is the prolonged lack of electricity, which residents say has persisted for an extended period without any clear intervention. They noted that the blackout has negatively impacted businesses, students and households, making daily life increasingly difficult.
Community leaders accused successive administrations of failing to address the area’s developmental needs despite repeated appeals and promises. They called on the Oyo State Government to urgently intervene by rehabilitating schools, fixing roads and restoring power supply to improve living standards and boost economic activities.
Parents, traders and youth groups also appealed to relevant authorities to prioritize the community’s needs, stressing that access to quality education, reliable infrastructure and electricity are essential for sustainable development.
As residents continue to hope for government intervention, many fear that continued neglect could deepen poverty, limit educational opportunities and slow the overall growth of the community.
