FG vs ASUU: Fresh showdown looms over October half salary

A fresh round of crisis is increasingly brewing in Nigeria’s public universities just two weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, called off its eight-month strike.

The lecturers under the umbrella of ASUU were on Monday bewildered, following the payment of salary for only 18 working days in the month of October to its members by the Federal Government.

Again, Taraba varsity lecturers warn of imminent strike

Taraba State University lecturers have again expressed disappointment over the delay in the payment of their monthly remuneration by the State government.

The lecturers said the public should hold the State government responsible if they decide to embark on a fresh industrial action.

Lagos school calls for problem-solving curriculum

THE Platform Schools, Ipaja, Lagos, has called stakeholders in the education sector to come up with curriculums that will solve the country’s problems.

The school’s director, Mr Bola Obe, who was recently awarded a Doctor of Arts, (Hon) in Education Management by the St Luis African University, Porto Novo, Republic of Benin, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday.

Caleb British International School, Lekki-Abijo, Lagos, has won an international football competition played against some Canadian Schools and UK students.

A statement by the school said the representative of Southampton Football Academy, Mr ED Kilby visited Caleb British International School, Lekki-Abijo GRA to appreciate and to present certificates of participation to students who took part in the Football training in the United Kingdom.

Education will drive sustainable development – Group

Nigerian Petroleum Development Company and Natural Oilfield Services Limited have said quality education will drive sustainable development in the country.

A statement signed by the group while presenting furniture and academic materials to schools who participated in educational and extracurricular activities organised said In his remarks, Base Manager, NOFSL, Group Captain (retd.) EteteEkpo, congratulated the recipients and stated that NPDC and NOFSL would continue to support the schools in their capacity by playing their part in the educational and non-educational development of the selected schools.

Rainbow College excels in 2022 WASSCE

Rainbow College, Lagos, has recorded another groundbreaking success in the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, with 99% A1-C6 grades across all subjects.

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has said showing appreciation to teachers will lead to greater achievements in the education sector.

Speaking at the 2022 Maltina Teacher of the Year, Osinbajo in a statement signed by the Nigerian Breweries Plc and made available to The PUNCH on Thursday said “The teacher must be appreciated. Everyone needs affirmation and encouragement, as it can only lead to greater achievements. And this is why I think that the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award is an incredible boost for teachers and the teaching profession.”

Bingham University graduates 78 first class in 4 years

The Vice Chancellor, Bingham University, Karu, Nassarawa State, Prof. William Qurix, says the institution has produced 78 first class students in four years.

Qurix disclosed this at a news conference in Karu on Thursday to herald the the 4th Combined 2018 to 2022 Convocation Ceremony of the institution.

NYSC: 4 corps members to repeat service in Sokoto – Coordinator

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Sokoto has imposed a repeat of service year on four corps members for allegedly absconding from duty, absenteeism and other sundry offences.

The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Muhammad Nakamba, who disclosed this at the passing out of the 2021 Batch C, Stream 2 Corps members on Thursday in Sokoto, said that four others had their services extended by different periods.

Kwara increased bursary allowances for its indigenous students in tertiary institutions on Thursday from N5,000 to N10,000.

NUS president plans to fight dismissal over antisemitism claims

Shaima Dallali, the president of the National Union of Students, plans to fight the organisation’s move to oust her, as supporters expressed alarm at the handling of the antisemitism allegations that led to her dismissal.

The NUS said Dallali was dismissed as president this week after an independent investigation into the allegations found “significant breaches of NUS policies” – but that it would not reveal further details because of employee confidentiality.

Pupils block London council’s attempts to remove play space near school

A group of pupils in east London have seen off – temporarily at least – the workers who had come to dismantle their school street.

Parents gathered outside Chisenhale primary school in Bow, Tower Hamlets, on Thursday morning to show support for the area, which includes a play space protected by a wooden fence, trellised with plants and painted in bright colours.

Canadian bill would fine workers $4,000 for each day they strike

The premier of Canada’s most populous province is under fire for a “draconian” bill that would fine school support staff C$4,000 (US$2,900) a day for striking, prompting concerns that Ontario is eroding fundamental workers’ rights – and setting a troubling precedent.

Doug Ford’s conservative government tabled legislation this week that would unilaterally impose a contract on education workers, and levy hefty fines for striking. The move escalates a bitter dispute over pay for education workers, including custodians, early childhood educators and educational assistants.
