The Bayelsa State government has announced a significant boost to the education of children with special needs, introducing free tuition, feeding, and uniforms at its state-owned special needs school.

Governor Douye Diri made the announcement on Monday at the Government House in Yenagoa, during a reception for 12 graduates who completed their training in special needs education at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Port Harcourt, sponsored by the Bayelsa State Education Trust Fund (EDTF).

Governor Diri underscored the administration’s commitment to inclusive education, directing the immediate employment of the newly trained teachers. He praised the EDTF for its contribution to this initiative, which he described as a key component of his administration’s education policies. The governor also noted ongoing educational infrastructure projects, including completed technical colleges and plans for new ones in additional local government areas.

Dr. Alice Atuwo, EDTF Executive Secretary, revealed that 15 teachers were initially enrolled for the training, with 12 successfully graduating. This development is expected to enhance the quality of education and support provided to students with special needs across Bayelsa State.
