The newly crowned Asagba of Asaba, Obi Epiphany Azinge, has urged the federal government to establish a Federal University in Asaba as compensation for the 1967 Asaba massacre.

Speaking at the 2024 Asaba Memorial Day Celebrations, Obi Azinge described the massacre, which claimed over a thousand innocent lives, as a crime against humanity that remains unforgettable in the hearts of the Asaba people.

The monarch emphasized that while forgiveness may be possible, the memory of the atrocity cannot be erased, and the demand for a Federal University is a just compensation for the brutal killings. He noted that 57 years have passed since the tragic event, yet the pain and loss are still deeply felt within the community.

At the event, Chuck Nduka-Eze, chairman of the Asaba Memorial and Monument annual event, highlighted the significance of the remembrance day, urging the Asaba community to support projects honoring the victims. As part of the observance, one thousand trees will be planted across Asaba to symbolize the enduring memory of those lost.
