The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a one-day extension for the registration deadline of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates. The examination body disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X account on Friday, stating that the new registration deadline has been moved to March 13, 2026.

WAEC explained that the extension was granted following technical glitches and high demand experienced during the registration process since January. The council noted that the decision was taken to allow more schools and candidates sufficient time to complete their registration before the examination process proceeds.

The Head of the WAEC National Office, Amos Dangut, had earlier assured stakeholders that the computer-based examination would be accessible to students across every part of Nigeria. Speaking during a sensitisation session with members of the National Assembly Committees on Education in Abuja, Dangut said the council was committed to ensuring that no candidate would be disadvantaged by the transition to digital examinations.

According to him, WAEC has already begun a phased introduction of computer-based testing, starting with objective questions before gradually expanding to theory and practical components. He added that the council is working with the Federal Ministry of Education, state governments, and other stakeholders to establish adequate CBT centres nationwide, improve electricity and internet access, and train personnel to manage the examination process effectively.

Dangut further noted that WAEC is mapping out examination centres in every local government area to reduce travel distances for candidates, particularly those in rural communities. He emphasised that the move to computer-based examinations aligns with global assessment practices and will enhance transparency, security, and efficiency while reducing cases of examination malpractice and delays in result processing.
